What is wool serge?
Wool serge is a dense, heavy-duty fabric traditionally manufactured from sheep’s wool woven together to create a thicker finish that has become a staple of the theatrical industry. Its thicker nature offers a range of benefits, from light blocking to acoustic dampening, that has massively benefitted theatrical venues for creating stage wings and borders.
Types of wool serge
At Stage Depot we offer three variations of wool serge: 395, 560 and 840 gsm versions. Depending on the venue's requirement would determine the best-suited wool serge. Below are the benefits and uses of each of the materials.
395gsm Wool Serge
This lightweight material offers excellent value, being the budget-conscious version of all of the wool serges offered. Perfect for use within small school stages, masking and creating lightweight borders, this material offers excellent light absorption, perfect for use in slimmer-profiled track systems.
While this material does offer excellent light absorption properties, it should not be used as a blackout material, as extremely bright lights are visible through the material. If a complete blackout is required, it is recommended that either the 560gsm or 840gsm variations be used instead.
560gsm Wool Serge
The most commonly used variation of all the wool serges, this is the classic go-to choice for use within theatres. It is perfect for creating stage legs, backdrops and auditorium curtains. The thicker nature of this material perfectly lends itself to use.
Offering greater light-blocking properties than the 395 gsm version, this version of the wool serge offers full blackout, perfect for stage drapes and curtains.
840gsm Wool Serge
Our 840gsm version is the most efficient at damping sound; it's the thickest version offered and offers excellent blackout alongside the sound dampening. While it does not completely soundproof, it does help to mildly reduce noise, making this material perfect for use for front-of-house curtains.
What does the GSM of each version mean?
The GSM (or the grams per square metre) refers to the thickness, weight and density of the material; usually the larger the GSM, the more improved the drape is at blocking light, dampening sound and hiding onstage activity. The most popular material for stage curtains is often the 560gsm variation due to its excellent blackout properties; when manufactured into drapes, it does not exceed the working load limit of many track systems.
Is the Wool Serge Flame Retardant?
Yes, all the wool serges listed upon our website are flame retardant.
