The Uses for DMX Splitters

Adding a DMX splitter to a lighting set-up can offer a whole host of benefits from reducing signal degradation over a long DMX run to avoiding lighting downtown while troubleshooting signal issues. DMX Splitters can also assist with cable management allowing for singular cable to be run.

When would I add a DMX Splitter to my setup?

A DMX splitter would be recommended to be added to a setup in a couple of different scenarios:

  • 1) If the distance between the light desk and the last fixture runs over multiple meters you would want to add a DMX splitter to this chain to boost the signal and avoid any signal degradation over cable span


  • 2) If your setup has multiple lighting fixtures at various locations in the venue, a DMX splitter would be recommended. Using a DMX splitter in this situation would allow for simpler cable management.


  • 3) If your lighting console connects to your lighting and DMX hardware via one cable. Adding a DMX splitter between your desk and lighting fixtures would ensure that all of your fixtures are not connected via one cable and will enable quicker fault finding, if any issues were to arise.

Ethercon Network Switches

Network switches allow for ethernet based DMX protocols to be transported around a venue efficiently and assists with reducing the amount of cables that need to be installed. Add one of these unmanaged switches to your setup and stream DXM from your desk directly into your setup. Add a DMX node with these switches to convert an Art-Net signal into 512 channel DMX.

512 Channel DMX Splitters

These types of DMX splitters take a 512 Channel DMX signal for either a 3 or 5 pin DMX cable and split it into either 4, 6 or 8 additional DMX ports to send onto your lighting fixtures. These types of splitters offer an affordable option for DMX management with some DMX splitters allowing for configuration options.
