Application and advice

Application

Apply acrylic eggshell or alkyd undercoat in a colour suitable to create the desired effect and allow to dry for a minimum of 24 hours. It is recommended that the scumble is thinned with white spirit to ensure it’s applied in a relatively thin film. The appropriate viscosity will depend on the technique to be used. Colour your Scumble with Polyvine Woodgrain Oil Colourant, most oil based paints, or universal stainers. The use of a little white paint will stabilise delicate colours. Stir thoroughly. Brush the coloured Scumble over the base coat. Create the desired decorative effect by breaking the surface with a crumpled rag, bag, sponge or a Polyvine tool or brush. When the glaze is completely dry, seal with a coat of Polyvine Extra Pale Varnish.

Caution

Always test adhesion and the application of the effect on a trial area before starting. Low temperature, poor ventilation and high film thickness will cause delayed final drying. Avoid applying in cold damp conditions as this will also delay final drying. Scumble is prone to fading when exposed to strong sunlight for long periods. Scumble will turn dark if starved of light eg behind pictures etc. and is susceptible to severe yellowing in high temperatures.

Storage

Store in a cool, well ventilated area. Keep tin tightly closed. Protect from extremes of temperature during storage and application.

Health, safety and the environment

Flammable, keep away from sources of ignition No Smoking. Keep out of reach of children. Use only in well ventilated areas. Ensure maximum ventilation during application and drying. Do not empty into drains or watercourses. Some local authorities have special facilities for disposing of waste coatings. To avoid risk of spilling, always transport and store in a secure upright position. Cloths contaminated with uncured scumble may self ignite without warning. Dispose of safely.
